In July 2023, our group of 39 local and international volunteers along with 8 members of the GEF team built three new fully furnished, solar powered homes for three families in five and a half days; a record fast time for a group of GEF volunteers. Having previously experienced domestic abuse and homelessness, these three single mums and 14 children now have a safe place of shelter to call home. Below are the words of sisters Fi and Trish who were two of our fantastic volunteers.
“We signed up for the GEF house building trip in Karatina, Kenya and the impact of this experience is beyond words.
The trip was not only about constructing physical structures - it was also about fostering hope, building life long relationships and witnessing the profound difference that community and compassion can make.
From the moment we arrived, the warmth and resilience of the Kenyan people was palpable. Working alongside local volunteers - we were not just volunteers, we were partners in a shared vision of creating safe and sustainable homes. Each day was filled with hard work, but the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie was invigorating.
One of the most impactful aspects of the trip was seeing first hand how a secure home can transform lives. For the families, these houses represent stability, security and a brighter future.
The smiles on their faces when seeing their new homes for the first time was deeply humbling. Knowing each families challenging circumstances made this moment even more special. The experience also offered a deep sense of connection and cultural exchange. We learned about Kenyan traditions, shared meals and celebrated together. These moments of genuine human connection were invaluable, bringing us closer, and building lasting friendships.
An added bonus organised by the GEF team was the chance to meet not only our sponsor children, but also our parents sponsor children too. Moments we will cherish in our hearts forever.
We are extremely grateful to the GEF team who made it possible for us to be a small part of such a meaningful experience, which was a powerful blend of hard work, emotional moments and shared culture.
