12-year-old Velma is currently in Class 5 of Primary school but lives with the daily fear of being sent home due to unpaid fees. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful for a brighter future.
She and her family were displaced by the 2007 post-election violence in Rift Valley and later settled in Turkana. They now live in a small, two-room ancestral home. While space is tight, they’re grateful not to pay rent. Velma and her sisters sleep in a makeshift kitchen room, while her parents and brother sleep in the main house.
Her father sells water door-to-door to earn a living, but the income is barely enough to cover food, let alone school fees.
For £40 per month, you can sponsor Velma’s education and give her the opportunity to complete primary, secondary, and tertiary education. 100% of your support will cover her public school fees, uniform, shoes, and school meals, books, stationery and menstrual care products when needed. You’ll receive an annual school performance and life update, along with a photo of Velma as well as having the opportunity to exchange an annual letter.
Please email info@gathimbaedwardsfoundation.org if you are interested in supporting Velma.
