Velma, age 12

Velma and her parents settled in Turkana after being displaced following the 2007 post-election violence in Rift Valley. Velma and her 5 siblings now stay in an ancestral home with 2-rooms, while it is small they are lucky they have no rent to pay. The parents share one bedroom, their 18-year-old son sleeps in the living room, and the five daughters sleep in their separately constructed kitchen room.

Velma’s father commercially sells water locally to earn a living, while her mother is not employed. The family relies on the sales the father makes from going door to door selling water; however it is never enough to cater for the children’s schooling on top of basic food.

Velma attends primary school and is currently in class 5, however she has the constant fear of being sent home due to lack of fees while the parents try to support 3 of the children who should be in full time education.

By sponsoring Velma's education for £40 per month, you will be giving her the chance to attend and complete primary, secondary and tertiary education. 100% of your support will go towards her public-school fees, uniform, shoes, books, school meals, stationery and menstrual care products when required.

You will receive an end of year school performance and general update along with a photo from us and have the chance to meet her should you come on one of our Kenya House Building (next one 2026) trips to Kenya.
