As a result of contracting meningitis at 2 months old and not being able to afford the necessary medical care, Daniel Lilande Sagida has lived almost his whole life paralysed from the neck down. He can see and hear but is unable to speak due to his condition.
Daniel’s Father David used to work round the clock as a motorbike taxi driver in order to cater for his family. The long hours meant he rarely saw them and the relatively low income meant they were struggling to afford all of the various costs associated with Daniel’s care.
Getting Daniel to the hospital was extremely difficult for David and his wife Elizabeth due to transportation costs and also a lack of quality in the care on offer. We joined them for a trip to the hospital and were left majorly disappointed with the lack of expertise and interest towards Daniel’s condition.
The couple have since had a baby girl (also in the photo) who they named ‘Joy’ to symbolise the happiness she brought into their life following some very tough times looking after Daniel.
Thanks to the ongoing support from Janet O’Reilly and her family we are proud to be supporting Daniel’s medical care, transport, food, clothing and massage each month. Daniel has also recently started attending a special needs school which the family are very excited about. We would also like to thank Jenny McArthur for her monthly sponsorship of Joy.
The money David will save as a result of this support will also enable him to help improve the house his extended family who for the past 20 years have been living in a home with no windows or doors, floors made of mud and farmland littered with huge rocks which means they are unable to farm crops for an income.
We are delighted that David (below) is now working with the foundation full-time dealing with payment of school fees, clothing, delivering food, co-ordinating our school twinning programme and various other duties. He really is one of the most loyal, decent and hardworking guys around who has helped us reach many children thanks to his motorbike.
