“I joined GEF in Kenya as a volunteer for six months in 2017, which was a truly life-changing experience. Given that this had been my first time to Africa, I spent most of the time at the beginning observing and accompanying the GEF team in both, the Karatina and Iten region, during their daily work with the ambition to first of all really understand the challenges faced by the Kenyan kids and their families, as well as those of GEF, who by then had already taken more than 250 children in need under it’s wings. In addition to a number of fun and rewarding field jobs I was able to help with, I found my role to be mostly behind the scenes, helping to smoothen some of the operations, like the exchange between the sponsored children and their donors from around the world.
At the beginning of 2018, I returned to Kenya to pursue my running ambitions and am still volunteering for GEF in the Iten region.”
GEF would like to thank Anke for all her help so far. Anke has written about some of her Kenyan experiences so far, if you would like to take a look, click here.
